One of the ways many airlines help out with the college expenses is by providing discounted rates for students flights. The discounts may vary, based on destination and whatever arrangements the university may have made with a particular airline. Typically, the student must be able to prove current status of enrollment at the time students flights are booked.
While programs vary, flights are more typically booked as round trips. This makes the discounted flights ideal for getting home for the holidays and in between terms. Some of the discounted flights may be limited on the days of the week or times of day that flights may be booked. In other cases, it may be necessary to book flights at least a month to six weeks in advance in order to qualify for the discount. However, the difference in cost of the tickets usually makes it well worth the effort to plan around the policies of the airline.
Flights are not limited to trips back home. In some cases, the student may need to book flights in order to take advantage of a special learning program sponsored by the university. Often in this scenario, the university takes advantage of the discount and pays for the flight directly. As with trips home, it may be necessary to book the flights well in advance of the departure date.
While there are exceptions, discounted students flights are usually limited to domestic flight only. The plans that do offer discounts on international travel usually have additional criteria that must be met, including booking schedules. The rate of discount will most likely be different for international travel as well.
It is always a good idea to inquire about discounted students flights when considering a college or university. The Admissions office will usually have information about any type of program that is endorsed by the institution, including the airline or airlines that participate in the program.
Students flights can save the student (and the parents or guardians) a great deal of money over the four year span of attendance. Universities usually benefit as well, by being able to offer this additional incentive to prospective students. Discounted students flights can be a great help to all parties concerned.
